Tanya Taylor Rubinstein has spent nearly thirty years helping people turn their lived experience into published books, and she has built her entire methodology on a truth most writing teachers never say out loud: writing your book was never just a craft problem. It's a somatic one, an ancestral one and an identity one.
Her own path into this work didn't look like a straight line. Twenty four years ago, Tanya was a single mother making five hundred dollars a month, freshly divorced, working as a solo performer and a writing coach. She had a vision, the words "the cancer monologues" floating over Lincoln Center, and she followed it. That vision became live performances with people living with cancer, and eventually a book, The Cancer Monologue Project, was an anthology built from her students' own stories.
That book got into O, The Oprah Magazine and onto the CBS Early Show. That one book brought with it opportunities that has allowed Tanya to help thousands of people write and publish their stories. And it proved something Tanya has spent every year since confirming again and again:
that the right container, the right structure, and the right kind of support can take someone's rawest, truest material and turn it into something that moves people. She built that container for her students before she ever built it as a business, and everything she teaches now grows out of that same root.
Today, Tanya is the founder of Somatic Author, where she and her team of author-led story coaches help women, femmes, and nonbinary humans write and publish memoir and hybrid nonfiction through a methodology that weaves somatic practice, ancestral work, and structural writing craft together. Also, she personally works with clients who are storytellers, more than writers, to speak their book aloud with her to complete their manuscript.
She is a facilitator of Family Constellations and ancestral healing work alongside her writing practice. She knows that your book is not just a professional asset. It's an act of reclamation, and she's spent her career proving that belief, one author at a time.
